IPE270 IPE — European I-Section Section Properties

IPE270 is a European IPE (I-Section) per EN 10365 (successor to DIN 1025 / EN 10034) hot-rolled structural steel section. Standard European IPE dimensions per EN 10365. Verify against ArcelorMittal / Tata Steel section catalog.

Section Profile Summary

This is a standard hot-rolled I-section profile covered by EN 1993. The tabulated section properties are computed from the nominal dimensions per the governing material standard. With Ix = 5,505 cm⁴, the strong-axis flexural stiffness is suitable for preliminary sizing of beams and beam-columns.

At 270 mm deep, this is a mid-range section for secondary beams, roof purlins, and bracing in standard framing.

Key Design Checks (EN 1993)

Check Formula This Section
Plastic moment Mp = Zx × Fy 164 kN·m
Deflection Δ = 5wL⁴/(384EIx) Use Ix = 5,505 cm⁴
Torsion St. Venant = GJ/L J = 12 cm⁴
Column buckling KL/r → Fcr r_x = 11.18 cm

Design Notes

Verification (EN 1993): All designs using this section must be verified by a licensed Professional Engineer. Before finalizing member selection, check beam-column interaction (P-M), lateral-torsional buckling, serviceability deflections, and all connection limit states. See Engineering Disclaimer.

Worked Example: School classroom beam — ipe270

Scenario: School building — tighter deflection limit for suspended ceiling integrity. Simply supported I-section, 7.0 m span, 2.4 m tributary width. Service loads: 3.5 kPa dead + 3.0 kPa live (15.6 kN/m total).

Given:

Step 1 — Live load deflection:

Δ_LL = 5 w_L L⁴ / (384 E Ix)

Δ_LL = 5 × 7.2 × (7020)⁴ / (384 × 210000 × 55,050,000)

Δ_LL = 19.7 mm

Step 2 — Deflection limit (L/360):

Δ_limit = L / 360 = 7020 / 360 = 19.5 mm

Step 3 — Dead + live deflection:

Δ_total = 42.7 mm

Step 4 — Design check:

⚠ Live load deflection exceeds L/360 — consider a deeper section, reduce tributary, or shorten the span.

Verify the design moment M*_Ed (from factored loads 1.35G + 1.5Q per EN 1993) does not exceed φMn = 164 kN·m. Also confirm shear resistance and bearing details at the supports.
